Ryan Kershaw is an award-winning guitarist, author and music educator originally from New Zealand who has pioneered a unique combination of music education and personal growth. Known initially in the New Zealand scene for his highly experimental, psychedelic guitar style – a genre he affectionately dubbed “Buzzy” - he became famous for pushing the sonic limits of the instruments – including with objects like a hammer and laser guns, and creating avant-garde effects such as whale sonar and dolphin calls with minimal effects.
Kershaw is widely recognized for bridging the gap between music technique and mindset. After battling severe mental health struggles, addiction and spotlight anxiety brought on by the rock-n-roll lifestyle, he completely transformed his life. He studied under world renowned leaders including Jack Canfield and Bob Proctor.
Ryan then developed a teaching philosophy that encourages confidence and wellbeing as being foundational to mastering the instrument. This culminated in his groundbreaking books and initiatives:
“Use Your Buzz to Play The Guitar”: a world-first book explicitly blending self-development with practical music education
“The Musicians Confidence Course”: an online curriculum designed to help creators navigate performance anxiety and creative blocks
Industry Leadership: He served on the board of Independent Music New Zealand (IMNZ) and founded the New Zealand Underground Festival to give independent, alternative acts a platform.
Make Money Teaching Guitar, Musicians Values, The Musicians Circle, The 50X Method
Ryan’s discography reflects a deeply versatile artist, ranging from the raw rock and blues of the Little Green Dragon EP to the highly experimental textures of The Buzz Tapes. As an educator, his students boast a 100% excellence pass rate, with many going on to tour internationally and become teachers themselves. After making an impact in New Zealand he expanded his teaching globally, spending several years based in Ireland.
